Botanic Farm Korean Skincare Review

Memebox sent me a few products to review from one of their new brands- Botanic Farms. My skin has been looking rough lately, so this was very exciting!

I received two sheet masks, a sleeping pack and a multi-step blackhead clearing strip set. Let’s check them out.

The first product I tried was the Natural Energy Kiwi Sheet Mask ($2). This was a pretty standard white sheet mask like you’ve seen me wear a few times on this blog before. I love using these for a quick, intensive boost whenever I feel like my skin is dull and tired. My skin felt moisturized and fresh afterward.

A few days after that I was ready to try the Polar Energy Hydrogel Mask Pack (Syn-Ake) ($4).

If the first sheet mask was sort of entry level, this one was advanced. It had a jelly-like plastic feel too it and a cool webbed effect like snake skin (attention to detail!). It was meant to promote skin cell regeneration, much like the way a snake sheds its skin (and was not infused with synthetic snake venom as I initially suspected  from the packaging). There was limited English on the packaging, so I did my best with guessing which side to stick to my skin (I went with the plasticy side that seemed more clingy) and left it on for at least 20 minutes.

This one looked pretty scary (in fact I had to announce I was wearing it from behind a closed door before I saw my husband so he wouldn’t freak out) but it wore pretty comfortably. I must say, I could feel real results immediately after! My skin felt smoother and more taut.

Yikes! Sometimes looking good requires looking scary for a little while first.

The Black Soybean Milk Pudding Sleeping Pack ($25) was crazy! It had a thick, gelatinous texture that didn’t want to smooth out at first. However, after massaging the almost chunky jelly on my face for a few seconds, it melted into a more easily applied gel. Even then it was still so thick that it couldn’t fully absorb, more like a slimy version of a mud mask. I just ended up swirling it around on my face for a while which was oddly therapeutic.

What also mystified me about this stuff was the way that the remaining product reformed itself back into a flat surface while I was applying the product. Using this stuff felt like a science experiment (and I’m into that).

Like it never even happened!

I can see why this is for sleeping in since it stays slimy for a while, but it did absorb ever-so-slowly over the course of the night. When I woke up, that seemingly impenetrable layer of gel had sunken into my skin, leaving only a faint film behind. My skin felt awesome and so plump and smooth. This stuff is great!

Finally we have the Egg Clear Black Head 3-Step Nose Pack ($3). This is like the ultimate warrior edition of your OG Biore strips.

This was an excellent product for me to try because I have both (ahem) a lot of real estate to try the product on and I have gross clogged pores and blackheads on my nose that I can never get rid of with standard strips.

Step 1 involves a pre-soaked thick tissue material that you apply to your nose. It’s so thick that I thought it was two pieces, but no. It’s pretty comfortable to wear, although it does sort of look like surgical dressing for a nose job.

Step 2 is a little closer to the kind of strip you may be used to, albeit much higher quality. You wet your nose to use it, then peel it off a plastic sheet and it sticks right on. It’s much less messy and much easier to use effectively than a traditional American strip. It has more of a cottony feel and it also has little snips around its edges to help it conform to you nose better rather than leaving those annoying air bubbles underneath. Leave this on for 10-15 minutes.

I thought about showing you the used strip and decided against it. You’re welcome. It was pretty gross, but also satisfying. Way more pore-clearage than a Biore.

Step 3 is a transparent gel strip covered in essence. This only needs to stay on for 5-10 minutes to help the essence soak in before you peel off.

And ta-da! There are still clogged pores on the bridge of my nose, but the sides are significantly clearer. I wonder if I could get 100% clear if I do these more regularly?

Enjoy a before (above) and after (below) of my nose pores. I know that’s kind of gross.
Can’t argue with results, though.

Pony 3 Eyeshadow Palette and Lipstick Review

Hi friends! I’ve got a new Memebox product that was sent for me to review. This time it’s the latest collaboration between Memebox and amazing Korean makeup artist and blogger PONY. They’ve collaborated several times in the past, and this iteration is called “Shine Easy Glam 3,” AKA Pony 3, and the collection is inspired by spring flowers. I was sent the “Brown Bloom” Eyeshadow Quad ($18) and “Orange Dahlia” Lipstick ($12).

First of all, I was immediately taken in by the packaging.

The boxes are so cute, and the holograph lettering on solid white and gold cases for the makeup feel simultaneously edgy and luxe. Both products have a nice weight to them and they seem higher-end than the price would suggest.

 

Minus the hologram, it makes me think a little of Tom Ford cosmetic packaging- not that I can afford anything by Tom Ford.

I was a little surprised at how glittery the eyeshadows themselves were. The color pairings are nice and they all complement each other, but I was expecting a more matte definition color instead of the very shimmery dark brown in the eyeshadow quad. They are beautiful though, aren’t they?

When swatched, I found the two light shades to both be fairly sheer while the orange and brown shades were much more heavily pigmented.

At first I didn’t know what to make of that glittery beige shade because it’s sheer, but incredibly sparkly. It quickly became my favorite of the bunch because I realized I could use it to transform other shades. I tried wearing all kinds of eye looks and tapping that shade lightly on the center of my upper eyelid for a glistening effect (it looked extra good on a smoky eye). Of course I took no pictures of these experiments (vacation life), but I’m sure there will be future posts using the shadow that way.

One problem I noticed was a lot of glitter fallout on my cheeks after applying these shadows (mainly the sparkling beige and the peachy orange), but I corrected this by applying my eyes before my concealer/foundation/whatever so I could dab the glitter off my cheeks with makeup remover without destroying anything. This worked well for me and I didn’t experience any additional fallout after the initial application.

I’ve included a couple shots of the shades in action, but I’m afraid these pictures don’t do them justice since I was working with some pretty bad lighting while I was out of town. The real thing was much prettier (and more pigmented), but at least you can see that the shades blended well together! The glitter was so fine that it blended into a really nice liquid looking sheen that I always loooooove.

Overall, I thought this eyeshadow palette was a great value and glitteryness made it a bit different than other similar comparable American palettes. The matte beige shadow was lacking a bit in pigmentation, but it still worked well as a base color and blending tone, so I didn’t mind.

As for the lipstick, this stuff blew me away! I’ve noticed with a lot of the makeup I get from Memebox that the eyeshadows are good, but the lip products are GREAT. This $12 lipstick was as creamy and moisturizing and opaque as something at least twice as much.

Nylon 16th Anniversary It Girl Palette Review

Memebox sent me the Nylon x Memebox XO #ItGirlPalette ($29) to review. This palette was created by Nylon Magazine in honor of their 16th anniversary and it’s definitely party girl oriented. It’s very sleek and minimal, and much like the Soothing Sista palette, it was smaller than I expected, but it makes the most of its diminutive size. It includes a decent sized blush and highlighter, six eyeshadows, a pretty big mirror and a double-sided brush/spongetip applicator with a surprisingly soft brush.

The shade names are kind of hilarious. Each one is based off a different celebrity scene queen, and all of the colors make sense for their namesake personality, especially the matte white “LiLo” shadow (see what they did there?).

There is also a really intense hot pink blush and a really sparkly highlighter. I was pretty scared of both of them (although they actually worked out just fine with a light touch).

I was a little disapointed with the initial swatches. These are not swatched over primer, but the color payoff was ok but kind of dull for most of them.

Luckily, they fared a lot better once I applied them to my eyes over primer! I had a lot of fun playing with these shades and they work well separately or together. I have prepared two looks for you using all of the shades.

First we have the “good girl” look in gold. I used the Lana and Mary-Kate shades on the lid, Nicole in the crease and Lilo on browbones. I also used a small amount of the blush and highlighter on my cheeks and was pleased with how wearable they actually were.

Next is the “bad girl” look in red. I have Paris on the lid, Mischa blended heavily from the outer corner and lower lashline, The Moment highlighter in the inner corner, Sweet 16 blush blended into the crease for a halo effect and LiLo on the browbone.

All in all, I was very pleased with the palette and since it is so tiny, I think it would be great for travel or for stashing at your desk. When packed with an eye primer, mascara and a blush brush, this kit has everything else you need for a weekend trip!

SoothingSista XO Memebox #EyeLove SF Eyeshadow Quad Review

Memebox sent me the Soothing Sista XO Memebox #EyeLove SF Eyeshadow Quad for review. It came in a few days ago, and now that I’ve had time to play with it I’d like to share my thoughts with you!

The quad itself was surprisingly small (fits in the palm of my hand), but I was happy to see that the shadows inside were actually pretty large. It’s sturdy with a nice mirror and since it’s small it should travel well in lots of different bags.

The individual shadows are each about the size of a quarter.

There are two matte taupe shades, a rose gold glitter and a maroon shimmer shadow. The shadows are all warm toned and all of the shadows work individually or in any combination together. The rosiness of it skews it toward Marsala, this year’s Pantone color of the year, and the formula feels smooth and silky. The two matte shades are a little close in tone to each other, but as you can see in the eye looks below, they are distinct once applied. The pink glitter was sheerer than I expected, but that works to its advantage when used as an accent color and it goes on more intense when wet. The colors can be both playful or sophisticated and the palette is extremely versatile and easy to use.

These shades really reminded me of the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette, so I decided to do some side-by-side comparison swatches to see if they are true duplicates.

Here are my swatches of the SoothingSista #EyeLove shades on top and Urban Decay Naked 3 shades on the bottom:

As you can see, none of the shades are exact dupes, but they’re similar. The pigmentation of the matte shades isn’t as intense as the Naked 3 shades, but I actually like the Memebox shimmer shades better than the UD shades. The tones of the shimmer colors are better and there’s less fallout. So while this isn’t a replacement for my Naked 3 palette, it’s a really excellent compact travel version and it’s only $17 instead of $52.

But I digress. Let’s see the shadows in action! Here are three of many possible looks using these shadows:

I found the shadows very versatile and flattering, and I think they’re mix-and-matchable enough to be easy for people of all skills levels to use. No intimidating color combinations, but they’re not boring, either. Way to go, SoothingSista! Now can I have your blue ombre hair?

Korean Highlighter Stick and Tinted Sheer Lipstick Review

Hi guys, I’m back again!

So a very long time ago Memebox kindly sent me two more of their awesome K-Beauty products for me to review and I went out of town and lost track of things. I feel really bad about it, but here is the long overdue review!

First we have the VirginKiss Tinted Lip by Clio. This is essentially like the texture of one of those lipstain pencils if you’re familiar with them, but in lipstick form (which is kind of more convenient, IMO since the pencils seem overly large).

This shade is an extremely bold orange-coral and it’s a nice balance between bold color and sheer coverage. The color is somehow vibrant and sheer at the same time. It goes on very bright right away, and no amount of layering seems to change the look. What I mean is you can layer and layer it on and it never cakes up, it just keeps the exact same consistency and shade. It feels like it’s just integrating into your lips somehow. It’s not creamy like a lipstick, it’s more of a solid stain product. It almost feels like nothing is transfering to your lips, yet it leaves a bright, long lasting stain behind. I think it’s pretty cool!

Next is the PeriPera Heart Glow Stick which is a golden cream highlighter in stick form.

I’m not sure if this shade will work on all complexions, but for warm to neutral complexions it blends in really well. I was scared about how intense it looks in the stick, but it sheers out nicely! I was impressed with the construction of the product because the stick itself seems really sturdy and has a second cap that you have to pull off after you take off the outer cap, which keeps it extra airtight so it won’t dry out on you. That seems very thoughtfully designed, right? I’ve been getting a lot of use out of this lately when I need to perk up my complexion on the way out the door! Sometimes a quick fix makes a big difference.

I would have posted a picture of it sheered out the way you’d actually wear it, but it’s subtle enough that it wasn’t picking up for my camera. Which is how I like my makeup to act.

Memebox Special #34 Whole Grains 2

Memebox sent me the Special Box #34 (Whole Grains 2) for review. It’s interesting how each set of moisturizers Memebox sends has a slightly different effect. While some of the other boxes left my thick, this one made it feel exceptionally smooth and made a big difference in my pores. It had a variety of product types, too, so it wasn’t all just moisturizers.

Tosowoong Timeshift Emulsion ($34).

Oh, I love this stuff. It comes in a very heavy, luxurious glass bottle and it just melts into the skin beautifully. The texture is a bit thin and it’s sort of a cream-serum hybrid, but it does spread well over the skin and gives a nice refreshed feeling right away. This was my favorite from the box, followed closely by…

Osho Multi-Functional Whitening Cream ($34).

I was really scared about the whitening cream at first, because I’m already pale enough as it is. Some online research informed me that this cream actually evens skintone out rather than full-on bleaching, so I gave it a try. I was really intrigued by the crazy pearl packaging and the little caviar spoon they provide to measure out your product and was excited that I’d get to use it after all.

Once I tried it, I really like it! I think it improved my skintone a bit and added some luminosity, and when combined with the Timeshift Emulsion it made my skin feel sooooo soft and smooth. It made a huge difference in my pores as well! I tried experimenting with only using this product or the emulsion on a given night to see if one of them was responsible for my skin’s improvement, but I got the best results when I used them both together. I liked this so much more than I thought I would, it’s the sleeper hit of the bunch.

Be forewarned, if you put too much on you’ll look like a vampire (at least before it soaks in or washes off).

echoice Wash Oatmeal Body Scrub ($5).

This body wash has tiny little particles that feel like small grains of sand, but it was much gentler than I expected. This is a gentle exfoliator that would be fine on sensitive skin or for every day use (a harsher scrub could only be used every few days).

Seven DIAS Medi anti blemish serum ($29).

This stuff seemed pretty powerful and did seem to help with the mild acne flareups I’ve been having lately. It didn’t dry me out, and I’m really happy with the size of the tube.

Young Face Nuruk Natural Mask and Scrub ($5).

This mask has to be combined with various food ingredients (milk, honey or yogurt) and to be used and refrigerated after use. Every time I want to use it, I realize I don’t have the ingredients. 😦 This product is still untested because I’m not ready for this level of complexity in my beauty routine.

Young Face Natural Soap ($12).

This soap was very gentle and seems to be a skin-cleansing soap only rather than a typical cleanser. What I mean is that it couldn’t remove my makeup and I had to wash my face first with a stronger cleanser, then used this afterward. That seems pretty high maintenance, but it did feel very gentle and moisturizing on my face. It’s probably not something I would buy again, but I’ll keep using it since I have it.

And that’s it for this box. This was mostly a hit, and as usual the value of the products far exceeds the price of the box.

All New Liquid Lip Tint by Memebox!

This is extra exciting! In addition to curating a variety of fun K-Beauty products, Memebox has created their first line of cosmetics in partnership with RE:CIPE. Memebox has provided this “Time on My Lip” liquid lip tint in Awesome Pink free for me to review, but as always, all opinions are my own.

This product line launches October 23rd and will retail for $12, although there’s a special deal if you sign up on their website in advance. This is paraben-free, and promises a buildable, “gradient” tint. It’s designed to be layered, and Memebox recommends dabbing lightly for a tint, applying a full coat for a shiny gloss, and layering on a second coat for an opaque lipstick effect. Memebox also suggests switching it up by blotting down the opaque, glossy finish for a lasting matte lip.

So I tried each of these methods and I LOVE IT. I’m not just saying this, check out the swatched pictures:

Am I right? It’s so pretty! It’s also very moisturizing and smooth. You can probably see how the lines in my lips smooth out as I build the coverage. It’s very even-looking and easy to apply. I didn’t notice much of a scent, although it has a really mild “makeup” taste if you lick your lips.

The packaging has a nice weight to it and the lip logo on the front is clear so you can see the product inside. I also noticed that the color is the exact color of the Memebox box. Cuuuute.

So I’m a fan! I can see myself buying additional colors when the full line comes out on Thursday.

Memebox Superbox #49: Lip Box Review

Memebox has provided me with another box to review!!! This time it’s Superbox #49: all about lips. If you’re unfamilair with Memebox, here’s a link to my first review. There are different types of boxes offered, and the one I’m reviewing today is a Superbox, which they describe as such: “Superbox was inspired by our Memebox lovers, looking for full-sized products catered to specific needs. Each Superbox series comes with its own theme, designed to target particular concerns, or collaboration with our favorite brands!”

I’m sorry in advance for the picture quality, I’ve been out of town for a while and can’t download photo editing software to the computer I’m using. 😦

Regardless, it’s worth checking out the products in the box, even if the color balance is off. So here is everything I received!

A few of these are similar to products we have in America, but there were also products included that were very new to me. Here’s what was involved:

Very Six 6 Seconds Kissing Lip Gloss ($17).

This goes on clear, but reacts within six seconds to create a perfect “my lips but better” flush. It’s sort of like a mood gloss, and the effect is very subtle, but very pretty. My very pale lips looked slightly flushed, like when you just wake up and your lips are at their fullest. I really like it and think it’s a great option for days when you need to look effortlessly polished.

Shara Shara Petit Friend Tint Balm in Crown Orange ($8).

This lipcolor-balm hybrid was so cute, and like nothing I’ve seen in the states. I loved the color it provided, too. It was glossy but non-sticky and had the perfect peach tint. It definitely reminded me of the smooth peachy lips you see in many Korean advertisements. And the packaging is adorable! I loved the tin, as well as the effect of the cute lipcolor “crown” that was set into the sheer gloss. I love this. I love it so much.

RiRe Tick Tock Lip Gloss in Peach Orange ($18).

This surprised me! I thought it was a typical lipgloss, but it actually included a spring-loaded lip brush in the handle. Crazy! I accidentally hit the button when I uncapped it and the brush went flying across the room.

I’m not sure if there’s a need for a detachable spring-loaded brush vs. a brush that’s attached to the cap, but the brush itself was very long and offered great control. The lipcolor was also more opaque an I expected and ended up as more of a paint/liquid lipstick. It stayed very well and the pigmentation was amazing! Very comfortable to wear, too. Brush problems aside, I give this product a major thumbs-up.

Cheek Room Color Lips in Red ($12).

Next we have what looked like a standard red lipstick, except that this one was a little sheer and packed with glitter! It’s difficult to tell from these pictures, but the color and glitter makes it similar to OCC’s Electric Grandma lip tar, but a little darker and in lipstick form. It’s actually a little more wearable than Electric Grandma because as you can see in the swatch, the glitter looks a little less glittery and more like a metallic lipstick. I found this color very flattering on me, but the tube is a bit deceptive since it is definitely more peach or orange than red. I thought it was really fun and would be great for a night out, although in real life it’s more glittery than you can tell from these pictures, so I couldn’t pull this off for everyday use.

Royal Nature Paint Mousse Lip Lacquer in True Blood ($24).

This raspberry-colored liquid lipstick had a mousse texture unlike any lipstick I’ve ever used. It was like a whipped lipstick, which felt great to apply, although it smudged a bit before it dried, so I had to be careful. It did set after about 30 seconds, and it dried into a pretty, matte finish.

Cheek Room Lip Tint in Red ($12).

This stain didn’t seem to have much product in the tube (compared to other reviews I’ve seen, I think this was a mistake, because other tubes have been full). That’s a shame because I really liked it! It’s got a similar liquid-y feel to most lip stains of this type (think The Balm’s Staniac or a slightly thicker version of Benetint), but the color itself was a bit more natural on me and not quite as red. Sometimes lip tints seem really intense on my fair skin, but this was more sheer and I looked like I’d just bitten my lips. The one downside was that it left sort of a bitter taste on my lips.

Of all the products in this box, I’d say my favorites were the Petite Friend balm and the Tick Tock Liquid Lip. I’ve also noticed that a lot of Korean products tend to flatter my skintone as they are often a bit peachy. As a pale, mildly olive girl with neutral undertones, that’s a great fit.

Memeboxes always contain a lot of product for the price, so these are always a good deal. This particular box had a retail value of $91, but the box itself cost $23. Unfortunately, this one is currently sold out (they sell out SUPER QUICKLY), but every box I’ve received so far has been a really great value, so you can’t go wrong (check out some of my other reviews to see the types of products offered!).  Happy Memeboxing!

Memebox Review – SUPERBOX #34: DERMO-COSMETICS BOX #2

Memebox has provided another Memebox for me to review! I love these boxes, so I’m pretty excited to tell you about it. This was provided to me at no cost, but the opinions are my own. Even so, I think you can tell just by looking at how much was in this box that it was a good value, no matter what I have to say about it.

This superbox retails for $39, but the products inside are full sized and have an MSRP of $200.

This box included a 3-step regimen and thankfully Memebox included a product information card with instructions since the packages were all written in Korean. They also helpfully explain which order to use the products in, which is great since I wouldn’t have known otherwise (or known which products to pick that would go well together).

I noticed a difference right away after using these products, but then I spent a week and a half using the skincare regimen day and night before writing this to make sure and give a more accurate impression. I’m really pleased with the results!

REBOM Calming Skin ($30).

Step 1: This was an enriched facial mist that refreshed my skin before adding the heavier moisturizers. I especially liked spritzing it on in the morning to help wake me (and my skin) up.

KANG SKIN Aqua Essence ($72).

Step 2: This had a liquid-gel consistency, it’s more of what we’d consider a serum in America. This was the second step in the regimen.

KANG SKIN  Rejuvenating Cream ($72).

Step 3: This was a thick cream with intensive moisturizing properties and it worked very well. This felt more like the moisturizers I’m familiar with rather than the deceptively watery steam cream from last month’s box.

COTTERANG Acne Killer Kit ($20).

I didn’t get to use this since I wasn’t broken out, but I know this will be excellent when it inevitably happens. This is a good thing to have on hand.

COTTERANG Bubble Peeling Pad ($7).

This was an unusual product, but it was very effective. It was like a cosmetic powder puff that was spongey on one side and soaked in a foaming, exfoliating cleanser. It felt gentle but worked very well. I’m not sure how often it needs to be used, but the results were immediate and have lasted a few days at this point, plus it added to the smoothness effect I got from the other products.

So my previous Korean skincare experience with the Milk Box made my skin feel thick and strong, while this box made my skin feel extremely smooth and had more of a retexturizing effect. Both results were really good, but it was interesting to see how different products can change the skin texture. I was happy with either and you really can’t argue with the price. I liked how all of the products were curated to work well together for a specific result.

Memebox Special Edition Milk Box Review

Wow, Memebox sent me a second box for review, and this one was even better than the first! I mentioned in my last review that Koreans are famous for their advanced skincare, and this box (available through http://us.memebox.com) was all about skin. The theme of this special edition box was “milk,” and every product either contained milk or had a creamy consistency. It is available for $23 and is definitely worth far more than that.

I tried out every single product from the milk box and definitely feel a difference in my skin. It feels smoother, but also a bit stronger, somehow? It feels like it has been nourished and fortified instead of thin and frail.

Hello Everybody Steam Milk Bubble Bath ($4).

There’s something so relaxing about soaking in the bath. This was soothing and nicely aromatic. I love baths and it’s nice to use a bubble bath that isn’t made for kids!

Hello Everybody Nature Holic Body Lotion Milk ($25).

This is a light moisturizer that feels very nourishing but not greasy. I kept using it and it seemed like I couldn’t over-apply it because it didn’t leave any greasy residue.

Pure Smile Choosy Lip Scrub in Peach Milk ($9).

This was a nice sugar scrub with a fresh creamsicle scent. It was a generously sized tub, so my lips will be exfoliated for a long time to come.

Pure Smile Choosy Lip Pack Milk Tea ($1).

This was so strange! I liked how my lips felt after, but while I was wearing it I felt like a mannequin or something. The Pack is actually a gummy-textured sticker mask and it gives your mouth a scary plastic look. I thought it was neat.

Enasti Rice & Milk Foaming Cleanser ($15).

I love this cleanser, I’ve been using it every day! The foam is more of a dense lather, and my skin feels a bit thicker and stronger after I use it.

Skin Ceramic Donkey Milk & Argan Oil Multi Steam Cream ($34).

This was very rich and deeply moisturizing, but a little goes a long way. It’s very thick, but a little “wetter” feeling than a lot of American moisturizers. It’s been working really well so far and this tub should last a long time!

Pure Smile Milk Mask Pack ($1).

This was freaky looking! Very effective, though. It was thicker than other paper masks I’ve tried, so it stayed on better, and I could feel the effects of the serum 24 hours later.

(This was the least scary picture I could get.)

Overall, I was extremely impressed with this box. Korean beauty products have a more water-based feel than many American products I’ve used (I’m not sure how the ingredients differ, but they definitely feel lighter) and I think my skin looked and felt healthy, smooth, and thick like porcelain. I would absolutely try Korean skincare products again when my current supply runs out! This box is also a great value with a suggested retail value of $89 worth for only $23.
