Deck of Scarlet Palette 02 and 03 Review

I recently subscribed to Deck of Scarlet, a company that creates a palette for its members every other month which is supposed to be a full look in a package. Each palette has three eyeshadows, two cheek colors and two lip colors all in one mirrored palette. They typically include one or two liners as well. I love the concept, but how does it perform? Is it worth $30?

My first palette was the Edition 02, which was available for May-June 2017. I was a late subscriber, so my palette came in late June as part of a second batch. It looked pretty, but the quality wasn’t there. I know they had a large increase in subscribers, so I’m not sure if it was a rushed second batch or what, but there were serious texture problems.

Deck of Scarlet Palette 02

Deck of Scarlet Palette 02 Swatches

The lip crayon was kind of greasy and smudgy, and the lipsticks were very thick and sticky textured. The blush wasn’t bad, but the highlighter was AWFUL. It felt gritty and chunky and there was surprisingly little pigment when applied.

Then there were the eyeshadows. The vibrant purple pigment was actually really good, but the peach color was dusty and under pigmented and the mauve was pretty hard to blend and work with. I did create the following look with it, but it took a lot of effort and priming and reapplication.

Deck of Scarlet Palette 02 Review

I’ll admit, the purple shadow was great. Everything else was pretty weak, though. Just try to find the mauve shadow in my crease. You won’t, because I worked it into oblivion when I tried to blend out its harshness. ūüė¶

Even so, I was willing to give them a second chance. My Edition 03 palette arrived yesterday for July/August 2017 any fortunately it’s a big improvement. This time the package included a liquid liner pen with a brush tip, along with the standard palette.

IMG_20170712_200148_654IMG_20170712_134136_848

The liner was excellent. Very precise, didn’t dry out during application and extremely dark and long lasting. I also love brush tip applicators, so that’s a bonus. The blush is good and the highlighter is very, VERY good. It’s soooo creamy and finely milled, the exact opposite of last month’s highlighter.

One of the lipsticks was the same kind of thick, tacky mess as last month, but the pink shade is an incredible matte stain, similar to the ColourPop blotted lips, or Glossier Generation G. It’s really great and I absolutely love it. Finally, two of the eyeshadows are good- the peach shade is dusty but pigmented and the matte greenish brown color was smooth and unique – ¬†but the sparkly pink is a little garish and has a sheer, crumbly texture.

I did another look using the latest palette, although I did go a little crazy with the liner because I was FEELING IT.

IMG_20170712_200148_653IMG_20170712_200148_651

All in all, there were a few misses this month, but overall a worthwhile kit. I’m excited to see how this company continues to grow and improve!

Jordana Spring 2016 New Products

Today I bought three of the new Jordana Sweet Cream Matte Liquid Lip Color¬†($4.99) and five of the six Made to Last Liquid Eyeshadows ($4.99)! I got all of these at walgreen’s, but they are also available at K-Mart. So far, they aren’t available for purchase online.

Let’s talk about the lips first. I’m really into these. I’ve become a liquid lipstick hoarder and this is a great formula for a very low price. They dry quickly to a matte finish that is lightweight and comfortable. They do get drying after a while, so if that bothers you, they also layer well over or under balms although that will reduce wear time. On their own with no balm, I was able to eat lunch and drink a coffee without any transfer, but they are not entirely smudgeproof, and will smudge if rubbed (but only if you rub them fairly hard, not just accidentally touching them).

What’s even better is that while I can’t personally confirm, I’ve seen pictures online that show the shade Creme Brulee is an exact dupe of the Kylie Lipkit shade Koko K, but for sooo much less (and also not constantly sold out).

Here are the shades I purchased: (swatched L-R) 01 Creme Brulee, a dusty pink; 07 Tiramisu, a rusty nude and 05 Mango Sorbet, a bright orange.

So those are really fun, but good inexpensive matte liquid lipsticks are becoming pretty common. What’s truly different are these metallic Liquid eyeshadows. Wowwww, i am in love with these (which is why I ended up buying every color the store had in stock). They’re super metallic and easy to apply. I used to like liquid eyeshadows in the early 2000’s, but they were always in little squeeze tubes that made them super hard to use. This version is a little creamier and has a paddle applicator that makes the much easier to apply.

I like to dab a little on my eyelids, let the cream set up for a few seconds, then tap the color with my fingers to blend. I add more as needed until it’s as vibrant as I want. I really like these, although I don’t know why they don’t have a better shade variety. They’re worth it either way. I’m obsessed with these. The swatches from L-R are 01 Forever Sand, 02 Not A Wink Pink, 03 Immortal Metal,¬†04 Uphold Gold, and 05 Dusk ‘Til Bronze (the 6th shade was sold out).

Nylon 16th Anniversary It Girl Palette Review

Memebox sent me the Nylon x Memebox XO¬†#ItGirlPalette¬†($29) to review. This palette was created by Nylon Magazine in honor of their 16th anniversary and it’s definitely party girl oriented. It’s very sleek and minimal, and much like the Soothing Sista palette, it was smaller than I expected, but it makes the most of its diminutive size. It includes a decent sized blush and highlighter, six eyeshadows, a pretty big mirror and a double-sided brush/spongetip applicator with a surprisingly soft brush.

The shade names are kind of hilarious. Each one is based off a different celebrity scene queen, and all of the colors make sense for their namesake¬†personality, especially the matte white “LiLo” shadow (see what they did there?).

Shade names, L-R:
The Moment highlighter, LiLo, Mary-Kate, Mischa, Sweet 16 blush, Lana, Paris, Nicole.
nylon xo memebox face palette shades

There is also a really intense hot pink blush and a really sparkly highlighter. I was pretty scared of both of them (although they actually worked out just fine with a light touch).

I was a little disapointed with the initial swatches. These are not swatched over primer, but the color payoff was ok but kind of dull for most of them.
nylon xo memebox sweet 16 swatches

Luckily, they fared a lot better once I applied them to my eyes over primer! I had a lot of fun playing with these shades and they work well separately or together. I have prepared two looks for you using all of the shades.

First we have the “good girl” look in gold. I used the Lana and Mary-Kate¬†shades on the lid, Nicole in the crease and Lilo on browbones. I also used a small amount of the blush and highlighter on my cheeks and was pleased with how wearable they actually were.
nylon xo memebox face palette gold look golden bronze eyeshadow look

Next is the “bad girl” look in red. I have Paris on the lid, Mischa blended heavily from the outer corner and lower lashline, The Moment highlighter in the inner corner, Sweet 16 blush blended into the crease for a halo effect and LiLo on the browbone.
nylon xo memebox sweet 16 eyeshadow look red and pink eyeshadow red fuschia eye makeup look

All in all, I was very pleased with the palette and since it is so tiny, I think it would be great for travel or for stashing at your desk. When packed with an eye primer, mascara and a blush brush, this kit has everything else you need for a weekend trip!

SoothingSista XO Memebox #EyeLove SF Eyeshadow Quad Review

Memebox sent me the Soothing Sista XO Memebox #EyeLove SF Eyeshadow Quad for review. It came in a few days ago, and now that I’ve had time to play with it I’d like to share my thoughts with you!

soothing sista xo memebox eyelove eyeshadow quad

The quad itself was surprisingly small (fits in the palm of my hand), but I was happy to see that the shadows inside were actually pretty large. It’s sturdy with a nice mirror and since it’s small it should travel well in lots of different bags.
soothing sista xo memebox rose gold marsala eye shadow palette

The individual shadows are each about the size of a quarter.
soothingsista x memebox palette scale

There are two matte taupe shades, a rose gold glitter and a maroon shimmer shadow. The shadows are all warm toned and all of the shadows work individually or in any combination together. The rosiness of it skews it toward¬†Marsala, this year’s Pantone color of the year, and the formula feels smooth and silky. The two matte shades are a little close in tone to each other, but as you can see in the eye looks below, they are distinct once applied. The pink glitter was sheerer than I expected, but that works to its advantage when used as an accent color and it goes on more intense when wet. The colors can be both playful or sophisticated and the palette is extremely versatile and easy to use.

soothingsista x memebox palette colors

Swatched L-R: Bae Area, Sutro, Valencia, Candy Rain.

soothingsista xo memebox palette eyeshadow swatches

These shades really reminded me of the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette, so I decided to do some side-by-side comparison swatches to see if they are true duplicates.

Here are my swatches of the SoothingSista #EyeLove shades on top and Urban Decay Naked 3 shades on the bottom:

soothingsista palette ud naked 3 dupe shades swatches

As you can see, none of the shades are exact dupes, but they’re similar. The pigmentation of¬†the matte shades isn’t¬†as intense¬†as the Naked 3 shades, but I actually like the Memebox shimmer shades better than the UD shades. The tones of the shimmer colors are better and there’s less fallout. So while this isn’t a replacement for my Naked 3 palette, it’s a really excellent compact travel version and it’s only $17 instead of $52.

But I digress. Let’s see the shadows in action! Here are three of many possible looks using these shadows:

Using both shimmer shades (Bae Area was applied wet):
shimmer eye look soothingsista shadow quad

Using only the two matte shades for a traditional contour look:
matte eye look soothingsista shadow quad

And finally, all four shades together with Sutro as a base shade, Valencia in the crease, Candy Rain in the outer corner and Bae Area blended lightly into the inner corner:full eye look soothingsista shadow quad

I found the shadows very versatile and flattering, and I think they’re mix-and-matchable¬†enough to be easy for people of all skills levels to use. No intimidating color combinations, but they’re not boring, either. Way to go, SoothingSista! Now can I have your blue ombre hair?

October Ipsy vs Birchbox review

I’m¬†on time this month! Birchbox has been here for a week, but Ipsy just got here. This month I got:

IPSY

The BB craze is getting out of control, but I DID really like this product. It smoothed my frizz and made my hair super soft. I really liked this stuff.

This was a decent exfoliating cleanser. Not sure if it was anything special.

Jesse’s Girl Mineralized Baked Shadow Powder in Plum Frost ($3.99).

Jesses Girl Mineralized Baked Shadow Powder plum frost eyeshadowJesses Girl Mineralized Baked Shadow Powder plum frost eyeshadow swatch

Man, I was excited because this was really pretty in the package and it was huge. Unfortunately, the color was kind of a generic shimmery, pinkish brown and not very pigmented. Not great.

Figs & Rouge Hand Cream in Rose Berry ($6.56).

A lot of Ipsters were not into the idea of handcream, but I was really excited because with each year that passes I get more and more into skincare. I think my skin now in my early 30’s is prettier and better than it was in my mid-20’s. This was a nice moisturizer and the packaging is so cute. I’m keeping it on my desk at work for added cheerfulness. All of the brand’s products look cute, so I may end up buying a few¬†as stocking stuffer gifts while there’s still a discount code.

Starlooks Lip Gloss in Guilty Pleasure ($12).

I’m not big into lipgloss, but this was a very nice nude pink color. A little thick and sticky, but pretty typical for a gloss. If you like gloss, this isn’t a bad option.

BIRCHBOX

ModelCo Party Proof Lipstick in Kitty ($24 for a set of 3).

modelco party proof lipstick kitty(The lighting was bad here, the lipstick looks lighter than this but I could only photoshop it so much. Sorry!)

I have actually received this same lipstick before in a different shade, and I like it now as much as I liked it then. This is a comfortable, long lasting lipstick in a nude-pink color. It was creamy, moisturizing and comfortable although it isn’t exactly matte. I’d say it’s more of a satin finish.¬†¬†Nude colors are kind of different on every person’s skintone, but¬†this is what it looks like on a pale, neutral-toned face.

modelco party proof lipstick kitty swatch

BeeKind‚ĄĘ Body Lotion ($15).

This was very clean feeling and absorbed immediately, although I don’t know that my skin felt very moisturized after. Kind of a weird experience, really.

dr. brandt¬ģ Exclusive Clean Up Nice Kit ($45 for the whole kit).

The included sample was a pore minimizing mask. You’re supposed to use it frequently to see results, so I can’t comment too much on the efficacy. My skin felt smooth and clean after using, but I’m not sure what the effect was on my pores.

Lord & Berry Paillettes Eye Pencil ($18).
Eh, it’s a mini eyeliner, which is not something I’ll end up using again (those stubby handles are annoying to use!), and it’s not really a product I like anyway. This is a glitter eyeliner, which is already something I’mnot always into, and the base is really lacking in pigmentation. Pass.

jesses girl mineralized plum frost eyeshadow lord and berry paillettes eyeliner swatch

Harvey Prince Petaly Noir ($55).
Perfumes are very individual so take this with a grain of salt, but I now know that I don’t really like Harvey Prince after receiving a ton of Harvey Prince perfume testers in past Birchboxes. They always have an added sweetness to them that doesn’t work for a person of my age. It’s fine for a girl in her teens or early 20’s, but I know a lot of Birchboxers are much older than that, so it’s weird to send this to everyone (it would make more sense for Ipsy, who skews a little younger). All I’m saying is don’t send me wrinkle cream in one box and sugar perfume in the next, Birchbox. Make up your mind of what demographic you’re going for and stick to it! Or at least reference my age in my profile.

And finally, here’s a full face look using the Jesse’s Girl eyeshadow, Lord and Berry eyeliner, and ModelCo lipstick.

September Ipsy v Birchbox Product Samples Review

Augh, I have so many review to do for you guys! A lot of things showed up on my doorstep in the last week, so I’m going to try to power through them all. Now that I’m caught up on Memebox, let’s talk about September’s Birchbox and Ipsy!

I know I didn’t review these for the last few months. I wanted to, but this summer was IN-TENSE, and you’d be surprised how much time I spend taking and editing pictures and putting these reviews together. I’m sorry, hopefully I’ll get back on a better schedule soon. I also didn’t get a chance to try everything before I had to go out of town, but I thought it best to go ahead and post before I get super behind again.

Ok, so this month’s Ipsy feautured:

september 2014 ipsy glam bag review

Hikari Lipstick in Cabernet ($13).

Hikari Lipstick in CabernetHikari Lipstick in Cabernet swatch on lips

I have never heard of this brand before, but this Hikari lipstick really exceeded my expectations. Weirdly, this “Cabernet” color doesn’t look at all like the shade pictured on the website and actually looks like the color “Crush,” but no matter. The packaging looks cute, but it unfortunately feels cheap in your hands. The swatch on my arm also took a few swipes to build and the lipstick dragged a bit when I was applying it.

BUT.

I love it on! The color feels balmy and smooth (if slightly waxy) and it wore down very evenly to a beautiful, lightweight stain. This was very comfortable on and longlasting. I’m not sure if I would want to pay $13 for it, but It’s definitely a good deal if you use this month’s code below.

Pacifica Natural Water-Proof Eye Pencil in Fringe ($11).
I was also pleasantly surprised by this Pacifica liner considering I hated the last Pacifica cosmetic I received. This line was smooth to apply and very pigmented. It isn’t waterproof, but from what I’ve seen so far it seems pretty long lasting.

20% off your entire purchase at www.pacificabeauty.com with code FallBeauty through 10/31/14.

Here’s a swatch of the liner next to the Hikari Lipstick swatch (which sadly looks less pigmented here than IRL due to my current lack of photo editing software).

This was a decent size and I got a couple uses out of it. It smelled nice and definitely helped my bleached out strands to feel a bit softer.
The deal on this one isn’t great (free shipping with code IPSYSEPT14), so I’d recommend buying this at Sephora where you’ll get freebies with your purchase.

This was soft and will be great for travel (which I do more than I should!). However, the Crown Brush website doesn’t list anything about synthetic fibers or being cruelty free, so I’m kind of conflicted about using this.

I love that this is natural and that it saves a few steps in my morning routine.

and on to Birchbox.
september 2014 birchbox review
I got an extra sample this month! This time they included 6 samples. One was a teeny perfume sample, so I’m glad to have gotten a little bit more (perfume vials always feel like a cop-out).
This is the perfume I mentioned, although if I’m going to drop more than $100 on a fragrance, I definitely want to smell it first. This was really nice. Not the sweet scent I was expecting, this is a more nuanced and sexy scent. They also included a postcard, which was neat.

TOCCA Crema da Mano Luxe – Hand Cream¬†($20.00). As creamy and moisturizing as you’d expect from TOCCA. It feels luxe and smells very nice.

I didn’t get to try this since Birchbox showed up right before I left town, but the packaging is fancy, so my expectations are high.

Same as above, this one didn’t get sampled. I’m really nervous that it will be too dark for my skin, but I’ll try to update this post after I’ve had a chance to try it.
This is about half the size of the full bottle, so I’m really pleased with how large the sample is. Another I couldn’t try, but from what I’ve read it works really well and a little goes a long way, so this should last me a long time.
I really love the standard Hydration lock, so this double-ended version with spf is even better! I’m happy.

Memebox Review

I was provided a complimentary Memebox¬†to review¬†this month. Memebox is a Korean beauty subscription service, and I was very excited to try the service because I’ve heard really good things about Korean beauty products (especially their skincare), but didn’t know where to begin. Memebox also sells many of the boxed products directly from their site if you want a specific item, but I didn’t know any of the brands and prefered getting the curated selection regardless.

memebox korean makeup subscription box
The box itself is very cute!
memebox packaging

In case you were wondering, the company’s name is pronounced mi-mi after a traditional doll that many Korean children play with (and not meme like the viral pictures you see on reddit!).

There are four different types of Memeboxes, and prices vary depending on which you choose. The options on the website are a little daunting, but based on their description, I believe this is how the boxes break down:

Memebox:
4 – 8 full-size products and deluxe samples of hair, body, skin-care and makeup products (but each box is uniform and everyone receives the same box).

Memebox Special Edition:
4-8 full-size products and deluxe samples that follow a theme (trend, season, etc).

Superbox:
Superbox is more targeted and focuses on a specific need or is a collaboration with a specific brand.

Luckybox:
4 – 8 full sized products and deluxe samples that are randomly selected, but curated with a focus on variety.

So this must have been a special edition box, it’s the Colorbox #2 and it focuses on ORANGE. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you may know that I absolutely love orange makeup, so I was happy about this!

The box contained 4 full sized products, here are the swatches, with more detail to follow:

Dearberry Flirt Lipstick in Million Dollar Orange ($12).
dearberry flirt lip stick in million dollar orange   korean cosmetics dearberry flirt lipstickdearberry flirt lipstick in million dollar orange dearberry flirt lipstick million dollar orangedearberry flirt korean lipstick million dollar orange

Don’t be afraid of this bold color, I think it’s actually very easy to wear! This is a color that just makes me happy when I wear it. This lipstick is fabulous, it’s very rich and moisturizing, and the color is smooth and opaque. The case is very cute, too!¬†I can’t find a link to buy this anywhere, which makes me sad because I really like it and would love to buy this in more shades! Hopefully it will be added to the Memebox shop soon. ¬†UPDATE! There’s a new Dearberry lipstick on the site for $8. I would highly reccomend this for a cheap, high quality lipstick that none of your friends will have.

Dearberry Today Nail Laquer ($3).
korean makeup pale tangerine orange dearberry today nail polish

This was a nice color, but the formula was a little streaky. I needed three coats for full coverage, and I still thought it could have been more even. For $3 it’s not bad, but it wasn’t my favorite product in the box.

L’OCEAN Eye Shadow L-29 Pastel Orange ($10).

locean pastel orange korean eyeshadow memebox l'ocean pastel orange korean eyeshadow single

This is a very nice eyeshadow. The texture wasn’t hard or buttery, somewhere in the middle, but it applied well and blended nicely and you can see that the color is very vivid, even though I did not apply a primer! This is a very wearable matte orange shade.

Tosowoong Bronze Sectrum Waterproof Gel Pencil Liner #11 Sunshine ($10).

makeon sunshine orange waterproof eyeliner

This eyeliner is SO GOOD. It’s extremely vibrant, it’s smooth and glides right on and it lasts. Look at the swatch on my arm after rubbing it very thoroughly with water and a tissue. It’s still there!

makeon sunshine waterproof eyeliner memebox swatch

In fact, as I am typing this (hours later), I still see it just as bright as it was in the picture. In some places this is referered to as Tosowoong brand, but the pencil says Makeon, so look for either name. This liner is fantastic, I would strongly recommend it.

And here are a couple views of everything together:

I also like the lip stain the Dearberry lipstick leaves behind. Look at how flattering that pretty warm pink tint is:

One thing I noticed was that my Memebox shipped EXTREMELY quickly. On Tuesday they told me they would be shipping it this week and it came directly from Korea by Friday! Amazing!

I really enjoyed this box, and I think my favorite product was definitely the lipstick.

If you’re interested in trying Memebox, you can receive $5 off on any order at us.memebox.com with code AFFILIATE-0362-83QK6-AWLP¬†through August¬†30, 2014. Let me know if you try it!
