Jordana Spring 2016 New Products

Today I bought three of the new Jordana Sweet Cream Matte Liquid Lip Color ($4.99) and five of the six Made to Last Liquid Eyeshadows ($4.99)! I got all of these at walgreen’s, but they are also available at K-Mart. So far, they aren’t available for purchase online.

Let’s talk about the lips first. I’m really into these. I’ve become a liquid lipstick hoarder and this is a great formula for a very low price. They dry quickly to a matte finish that is lightweight and comfortable. They do get drying after a while, so if that bothers you, they also layer well over or under balms although that will reduce wear time. On their own with no balm, I was able to eat lunch and drink a coffee without any transfer, but they are not entirely smudgeproof, and will smudge if rubbed (but only if you rub them fairly hard, not just accidentally touching them).

What’s even better is that while I can’t personally confirm, I’ve seen pictures online that show the shade Creme Brulee is an exact dupe of the Kylie Lipkit shade Koko K, but for sooo much less (and also not constantly sold out).

Here are the shades I purchased: (swatched L-R) 01 Creme Brulee, a dusty pink; 07 Tiramisu, a rusty nude and 05 Mango Sorbet, a bright orange.

So those are really fun, but good inexpensive matte liquid lipsticks are becoming pretty common. What’s truly different are these metallic Liquid eyeshadows. Wowwww, i am in love with these (which is why I ended up buying every color the store had in stock). They’re super metallic and easy to apply. I used to like liquid eyeshadows in the early 2000’s, but they were always in little squeeze tubes that made them super hard to use. This version is a little creamier and has a paddle applicator that makes the much easier to apply.

I like to dab a little on my eyelids, let the cream set up for a few seconds, then tap the color with my fingers to blend. I add more as needed until it’s as vibrant as I want. I really like these, although I don’t know why they don’t have a better shade variety. They’re worth it either way. I’m obsessed with these. The swatches from L-R are 01 Forever Sand, 02 Not A Wink Pink, 03 Immortal Metal, 04 Uphold Gold, and 05 Dusk ‘Til Bronze (the 6th shade was sold out).

Colourpop Fall ’15 Collection Review

Ok, time for some Colourpop realtalk. When it comes to this brand, internet opinions seem to fall into either a LOVE IT or HATE IT camp. I’m in neither camp and I want to tell you what these products (particularly the eyeshadows) are and are not good for. I ordered the Colourpop Forever Freshman eyeshadow set, two extra shadows, a matte lipstick and two ultra matte liquid lipsticks to get a feel for the brand. I purchased them last Monday and they just showed up today, so I wanted to get this review out while it was fresh in my mind.

SAM_7326 (2)

First of all, in case you are not yet acquainted, Coulourpop eyeshadows are weird hybrid mousse-cream shadows. There’s some debate over whether they are creams or powders or whatever and while they are a little different than a traditional cream, I would still call this a cream shadow for sure.

Because of this, they don’t apply well with brushes and work better with your fingers. A lot of people in the makeup community hate this about the shadows. I’m neutral about it, because there are benefits to that. Here are the pros and cons to these shadows:

PROS:
very pigmented
lots and lots of cool colors to choose from
blend very smoothly
fun to work with
can create extremely quick looks on the go
very pretty metallic shimmers
longwearing
inexpensive

CONS:
Don’t play well with brushes, so they’re not precise
difficult to create multi-colored looks
if you try to use glitter and matte the glitter gets EVERYWHERE
color sheers out when you try to diffuse
all of the sets include exclusive shades that can’t be purchased separately
sets do not cost less than buying the shadows separately
Not much product in pan
Some of the glitter shadows have glitter that’s too chunky

What does all that mean mean for you? Basically, the main issue is that the shades are difficult to blend together in a precise way. That means that hooded “smoky V” type eye that I like to do is all but impossible without a brush, but these shadows also don’t work well with brushes. So there’s that.

On the other  hand, they are really great for an all-over wash of color or a simple two-shade gradient. Those are very doable and they are quick, easy and beautiful. Plus you get to apply with your fingers and that’s fun.

My takeaway from all of that is if you really like complicated “beat face” eyeshadow looks, you will hate these shadows. If you like doing simple eyes sometimes or you are really intimidated by the idea of expertly blending four different shades into your crease and want a shortcut, then these are worth your time.

There’s also some really nice pigmentation to be had if you stick with these. Check out my swatches:

This is the Forever Freshman set ($30) from the new, ’90s-inspired Fall 2015 collection. It has three mattes and three shimmers. The Shades swatched L-R are Baby-T, Melrose, As-If, 90210, Koosh, Crimper.

coulour pop we heart it and shark attack coulour pop we heart it and shark attack swatches

These are two single shadows I was drawn to, Shark Attack and I Heart This ($5 each).

For my part, I have been a lot more into one or two tone washes of color offset by bold lips lately, so I’m actually pretty into these. I also think the cream shadows lend themselves to a particularly lovely sparkle that is hard to recreate in a powder shadow. For that reason, I think Colourpop super shock shadows also make a good base tone when you do want a cut crease look. You’ll just need to use a powder-based contrast tone in the crease.

Lippie Stix in Lumiere ($5).

This is ok, but I’m not wowed yet. It feels good, but looks sooo dry in the pictures. It feels like a Maybelline Creamy Matte (love those) and the Jordana Modern Matte, but I don’t think it looks as good on. It might just be this shade, I dunno. I also may have just needed to moisturize (I was in a hurry to get these swatched and reviewed TODAY, so shortcuts were taken). The packaging also seems  needlessly long.

colourpop lumiere lippie stix colourpop lumiere lippie stix lipstick

Ultramatte liquid lip in Beeper ($6).

This stuff is great! Ok, so it looks REALLY dry on my lips (as basically all matte liquid lipsticks are wont to do) because I didn’t adequately moisturize first, but what I’m so hyped about is that it feels extremely light on. This is the first liquid lip that I can actually forget I’m wearing because it doesn’t feel heavy and tight. It’s comparable to Kat Von D, but for a quarter of the price. I just need to be sure an plump up my pout before swatching next time.

Alright, let’s do some looks!

colour pop shark attack and I heart this super shock shadows

This is Shark attack and I Heart this blended together. This is the sort of easy wash I was talking about, this is where Colourpop shines.

Then there’s this wayyyy too subtle look-
coluorpop shimmer eye colour pop melrose and crimper shadows

That is an example of trying to smooth out the lines of an eye contour and blurring it into nothingness. Believe it or not, that was at one time As If, 90210 and Crimper from the Forever Freshman set (check the initial swatches and let me know if you expected that).

The problem was that I couldn’t get a balance of pigmentation and smooth lines. Blending the shades with any precision other than just an allover lid color is not going to happen.

After that, I tried to really challenge myself to make it work by adding the rest of the shades in, and this was the best I could do.

Also pictured: the Lumiere Lippie Stick.

Ok, so to salvage that sad look, I smoothed the crease out with a little bit of Busted from Urban Decay’s Naked 2 and added liquid liner. After that I felt way better about my super shocks.

Korean Highlighter Stick and Tinted Sheer Lipstick Review

Hi guys, I’m back again!

So a very long time ago Memebox kindly sent me two more of their awesome K-Beauty products for me to review and I went out of town and lost track of things. I feel really bad about it, but here is the long overdue review!

First we have the VirginKiss Tinted Lip by Clio. This is essentially like the texture of one of those lipstain pencils if you’re familiar with them, but in lipstick form (which is kind of more convenient, IMO since the pencils seem overly large).

clio virgin kiss tinted lipstick coral clio virginkiss tinted lip orange lipstain

This shade is an extremely bold orange-coral and it’s a nice balance between bold color and sheer coverage. The color is somehow vibrant and sheer at the same time. It goes on very bright right away, and no amount of layering seems to change the look. What I mean is you can layer and layer it on and it never cakes up, it just keeps the exact same consistency and shade. It feels like it’s just integrating into your lips somehow. It’s not creamy like a lipstick, it’s more of a solid stain product. It almost feels like nothing is transfering to your lips, yet it leaves a bright, long lasting stain behind. I think it’s pretty cool!

clio virginkiss tinted lip orange lipstain swatch

Next is the PeriPera Heart Glow Stick which is a golden cream highlighter in stick form.

peripera heart glow gold cream highlighter

I’m not sure if this shade will work on all complexions, but for warm to neutral complexions it blends in really well. I was scared about how intense it looks in the stick, but it sheers out nicely! I was impressed with the construction of the product because the stick itself seems really sturdy and has a second cap that you have to pull off after you take off the outer cap, which keeps it extra airtight so it won’t dry out on you. That seems very thoughtfully designed, right? I’ve been getting a lot of use out of this lately when I need to perk up my complexion on the way out the door! Sometimes a quick fix makes a big difference.

Here’s a swatch of it before blending, next to the VirginKiss swatch:

memebox heart glow stick virgin kiss swatches

I would have posted a picture of it sheered out the way you’d actually wear it, but it’s subtle enough that it wasn’t picking up for my camera. Which is how I like my makeup to act.

And check out this packaging. Outrageously cute, right?

So hopefully I’ll get back into blogging more regularly soon! I need hobbies outside of doing law related stuff or I will go crazy. I also have a few more old backlogged reviews that will hopefully be coming up this week. Talk soon! 🙂

All New Liquid Lip Tint by Memebox!

This is extra exciting! In addition to curating a variety of fun K-Beauty products, Memebox has created their first line of cosmetics in partnership with RE:CIPE. Memebox has provided this “Time on My Lip” liquid lip tint in Awesome Pink free for me to review, but as always, all opinions are my own.

memebox time on my lip lip stain review

This product line launches October 23rd and will retail for $12, although there’s a special deal if you sign up on their website in advance. This is paraben-free, and promises a buildable, “gradient” tint. It’s designed to be layered, and Memebox recommends dabbing lightly for a tint, applying a full coat for a shiny gloss, and layering on a second coat for an opaque lipstick effect. Memebox also suggests switching it up by blotting down the opaque, glossy finish for a lasting matte lip.

So I tried each of these methods and I LOVE IT. I’m not just saying this, check out the swatched pictures:

1. The light stain

2. Sheer and glossy

3. Fully opaque and shiny

4. Opaque but blotted

Am I right? It’s so pretty! It’s also very moisturizing and smooth. You can probably see how the lines in my lips smooth out as I build the coverage. It’s very even-looking and easy to apply. I didn’t notice much of a scent, although it has a really mild “makeup” taste if you lick your lips.

The packaging has a nice weight to it and the lip logo on the front is clear so you can see the product inside. I also noticed that the color is the exact color of the Memebox box. Cuuuute.

So I’m a fan! I can see myself buying additional colors when the full line comes out on Thursday.

September Ipsy v Birchbox Product Samples Review

Augh, I have so many review to do for you guys! A lot of things showed up on my doorstep in the last week, so I’m going to try to power through them all. Now that I’m caught up on Memebox, let’s talk about September’s Birchbox and Ipsy!

I know I didn’t review these for the last few months. I wanted to, but this summer was IN-TENSE, and you’d be surprised how much time I spend taking and editing pictures and putting these reviews together. I’m sorry, hopefully I’ll get back on a better schedule soon. I also didn’t get a chance to try everything before I had to go out of town, but I thought it best to go ahead and post before I get super behind again.

Ok, so this month’s Ipsy feautured:

september 2014 ipsy glam bag review

Hikari Lipstick in Cabernet ($13).

Hikari Lipstick in CabernetHikari Lipstick in Cabernet swatch on lips

I have never heard of this brand before, but this Hikari lipstick really exceeded my expectations. Weirdly, this “Cabernet” color doesn’t look at all like the shade pictured on the website and actually looks like the color “Crush,” but no matter. The packaging looks cute, but it unfortunately feels cheap in your hands. The swatch on my arm also took a few swipes to build and the lipstick dragged a bit when I was applying it.

BUT.

I love it on! The color feels balmy and smooth (if slightly waxy) and it wore down very evenly to a beautiful, lightweight stain. This was very comfortable on and longlasting. I’m not sure if I would want to pay $13 for it, but It’s definitely a good deal if you use this month’s code below.

Pacifica Natural Water-Proof Eye Pencil in Fringe ($11).
I was also pleasantly surprised by this Pacifica liner considering I hated the last Pacifica cosmetic I received. This line was smooth to apply and very pigmented. It isn’t waterproof, but from what I’ve seen so far it seems pretty long lasting.

20% off your entire purchase at www.pacificabeauty.com with code FallBeauty through 10/31/14.

Here’s a swatch of the liner next to the Hikari Lipstick swatch (which sadly looks less pigmented here than IRL due to my current lack of photo editing software).

This was a decent size and I got a couple uses out of it. It smelled nice and definitely helped my bleached out strands to feel a bit softer.
The deal on this one isn’t great (free shipping with code IPSYSEPT14), so I’d recommend buying this at Sephora where you’ll get freebies with your purchase.

This was soft and will be great for travel (which I do more than I should!). However, the Crown Brush website doesn’t list anything about synthetic fibers or being cruelty free, so I’m kind of conflicted about using this.

I love that this is natural and that it saves a few steps in my morning routine.

and on to Birchbox.
september 2014 birchbox review
I got an extra sample this month! This time they included 6 samples. One was a teeny perfume sample, so I’m glad to have gotten a little bit more (perfume vials always feel like a cop-out).
This is the perfume I mentioned, although if I’m going to drop more than $100 on a fragrance, I definitely want to smell it first. This was really nice. Not the sweet scent I was expecting, this is a more nuanced and sexy scent. They also included a postcard, which was neat.

TOCCA Crema da Mano Luxe – Hand Cream ($20.00). As creamy and moisturizing as you’d expect from TOCCA. It feels luxe and smells very nice.

I didn’t get to try this since Birchbox showed up right before I left town, but the packaging is fancy, so my expectations are high.

Same as above, this one didn’t get sampled. I’m really nervous that it will be too dark for my skin, but I’ll try to update this post after I’ve had a chance to try it.
This is about half the size of the full bottle, so I’m really pleased with how large the sample is. Another I couldn’t try, but from what I’ve read it works really well and a little goes a long way, so this should last me a long time.
I really love the standard Hydration lock, so this double-ended version with spf is even better! I’m happy.

Memebox Superbox #49: Lip Box Review

Memebox has provided me with another box to review!!! This time it’s Superbox #49: all about lips. If you’re unfamilair with Memebox, here’s a link to my first review. There are different types of boxes offered, and the one I’m reviewing today is a Superbox, which they describe as such: “Superbox was inspired by our Memebox lovers, looking for full-sized products catered to specific needs. Each Superbox series comes with its own theme, designed to target particular concerns, or collaboration with our favorite brands!”

I’m sorry in advance for the picture quality, I’ve been out of town for a while and can’t download photo editing software to the computer I’m using. 😦

Regardless, it’s worth checking out the products in the box, even if the color balance is off. So here is everything I received!

memebox superbox all about lips

With external packaging above (I wanted to include the boxes because I think they’re cute), and without packaging below:

memebox superbox 49 all about lips review

A few of these are similar to products we have in America, but there were also products included that were very new to me. Here’s what was involved:

Very Six 6 Seconds Kissing Lip Gloss ($17).

Very Six 6 Seconds Kissing Lip GlossVery Six 6 Seconds Kissing Lip Gloss swatch

This goes on clear, but reacts within six seconds to create a perfect “my lips but better” flush. It’s sort of like a mood gloss, and the effect is very subtle, but very pretty. My very pale lips looked slightly flushed, like when you just wake up and your lips are at their fullest. I really like it and think it’s a great option for days when you need to look effortlessly polished.

Shara Shara Petit Friend Tint Balm in Crown Orange ($8).

Shara Shara Petit Friend Tint Balm

This lipcolor-balm hybrid was so cute, and like nothing I’ve seen in the states. I loved the color it provided, too. It was glossy but non-sticky and had the perfect peach tint. It definitely reminded me of the smooth peachy lips you see in many Korean advertisements. And the packaging is adorable! I loved the tin, as well as the effect of the cute lipcolor “crown” that was set into the sheer gloss. I love this. I love it so much.

RiRe Tick Tock Lip Gloss in Peach Orange ($18).

RiRe Tick Tock Lip Gloss in Peach Orange

This surprised me! I thought it was a typical lipgloss, but it actually included a spring-loaded lip brush in the handle. Crazy! I accidentally hit the button when I uncapped it and the brush went flying across the room.

RiRe Tick Tock Lip Gloss in Peach Orange spring loaded brush applicator RiRe Tick Tock Lip Gloss in Peach Orange lip brush application RiRe Tick Tock Lip Gloss in Peach Orange swatch

I’m not sure if there’s a need for a detachable spring-loaded brush vs. a brush that’s attached to the cap, but the brush itself was very long and offered great control. The lipcolor was also more opaque an I expected and ended up as more of a paint/liquid lipstick. It stayed very well and the pigmentation was amazing! Very comfortable to wear, too. Brush problems aside, I give this product a major thumbs-up.

Cheek Room Color Lips in Red ($12).

Cheek Room Color Lips lipstick in RedCheek Room Color Lips in Red

Next we have what looked like a standard red lipstick, except that this one was a little sheer and packed with glitter! It’s difficult to tell from these pictures, but the color and glitter makes it similar to OCC’s Electric Grandma lip tar, but a little darker and in lipstick form. It’s actually a little more wearable than Electric Grandma because as you can see in the swatch, the glitter looks a little less glittery and more like a metallic lipstick. I found this color very flattering on me, but the tube is a bit deceptive since it is definitely more peach or orange than red. I thought it was really fun and would be great for a night out, although in real life it’s more glittery than you can tell from these pictures, so I couldn’t pull this off for everyday use.

Royal Nature Paint Mousse Lip Lacquer in True Blood ($24).

Royal Nature Paint Mousse Lip Lacquer in True BloodRoyal Nature Paint Mousse Lip Lacquer in True Blood swatch

This raspberry-colored liquid lipstick had a mousse texture unlike any lipstick I’ve ever used. It was like a whipped lipstick, which felt great to apply, although it smudged a bit before it dried, so I had to be careful. It did set after about 30 seconds, and it dried into a pretty, matte finish.

Cheek Room Lip Tint in Red ($12).

Cheek Room Lip Tint in Red Cheek Room Lip Tint in Red swatch

This stain didn’t seem to have much product in the tube (compared to other reviews I’ve seen, I think this was a mistake, because other tubes have been full). That’s a shame because I really liked it! It’s got a similar liquid-y feel to most lip stains of this type (think The Balm’s Staniac or a slightly thicker version of Benetint), but the color itself was a bit more natural on me and not quite as red. Sometimes lip tints seem really intense on my fair skin, but this was more sheer and I looked like I’d just bitten my lips. The one downside was that it left sort of a bitter taste on my lips.

Of all the products in this box, I’d say my favorites were the Petite Friend balm and the Tick Tock Liquid Lip. I’ve also noticed that a lot of Korean products tend to flatter my skintone as they are often a bit peachy. As a pale, mildly olive girl with neutral undertones, that’s a great fit.

Memeboxes always contain a lot of product for the price, so these are always a good deal. This particular box had a retail value of $91, but the box itself cost $23. Unfortunately, this one is currently sold out (they sell out SUPER QUICKLY), but every box I’ve received so far has been a really great value, so you can’t go wrong (check out some of my other reviews to see the types of products offered!).  Happy Memeboxing!

Memebox Review

I was provided a complimentary Memebox to review this month. Memebox is a Korean beauty subscription service, and I was very excited to try the service because I’ve heard really good things about Korean beauty products (especially their skincare), but didn’t know where to begin. Memebox also sells many of the boxed products directly from their site if you want a specific item, but I didn’t know any of the brands and prefered getting the curated selection regardless.

memebox korean makeup subscription box
The box itself is very cute!
memebox packaging

In case you were wondering, the company’s name is pronounced mi-mi after a traditional doll that many Korean children play with (and not meme like the viral pictures you see on reddit!).

There are four different types of Memeboxes, and prices vary depending on which you choose. The options on the website are a little daunting, but based on their description, I believe this is how the boxes break down:

Memebox:
4 – 8 full-size products and deluxe samples of hair, body, skin-care and makeup products (but each box is uniform and everyone receives the same box).

Memebox Special Edition:
4-8 full-size products and deluxe samples that follow a theme (trend, season, etc).

Superbox:
Superbox is more targeted and focuses on a specific need or is a collaboration with a specific brand.

Luckybox:
4 – 8 full sized products and deluxe samples that are randomly selected, but curated with a focus on variety.

So this must have been a special edition box, it’s the Colorbox #2 and it focuses on ORANGE. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you may know that I absolutely love orange makeup, so I was happy about this!

The box contained 4 full sized products, here are the swatches, with more detail to follow:

Dearberry Flirt Lipstick in Million Dollar Orange ($12).

Don’t be afraid of this bold color, I think it’s actually very easy to wear! This is a color that just makes me happy when I wear it. This lipstick is fabulous, it’s very rich and moisturizing, and the color is smooth and opaque. The case is very cute, too! I can’t find a link to buy this anywhere, which makes me sad because I really like it and would love to buy this in more shades! Hopefully it will be added to the Memebox shop soon.  UPDATE! There’s a new Dearberry lipstick on the site for $8. I would highly reccomend this for a cheap, high quality lipstick that none of your friends will have.

Dearberry Today Nail Laquer ($3).
korean makeup pale tangerine orange dearberry today nail polish

This was a nice color, but the formula was a little streaky. I needed three coats for full coverage, and I still thought it could have been more even. For $3 it’s not bad, but it wasn’t my favorite product in the box.

L’OCEAN Eye Shadow L-29 Pastel Orange ($10).

locean pastel orange korean eyeshadow memebox l'ocean pastel orange korean eyeshadow single

This is a very nice eyeshadow. The texture wasn’t hard or buttery, somewhere in the middle, but it applied well and blended nicely and you can see that the color is very vivid, even though I did not apply a primer! This is a very wearable matte orange shade.

Tosowoong Bronze Sectrum Waterproof Gel Pencil Liner #11 Sunshine ($10).

makeon sunshine orange waterproof eyeliner

This eyeliner is SO GOOD. It’s extremely vibrant, it’s smooth and glides right on and it lasts. Look at the swatch on my arm after rubbing it very thoroughly with water and a tissue. It’s still there!

makeon sunshine waterproof eyeliner memebox swatch

In fact, as I am typing this (hours later), I still see it just as bright as it was in the picture. In some places this is referered to as Tosowoong brand, but the pencil says Makeon, so look for either name. This liner is fantastic, I would strongly recommend it.

And here are a couple views of everything together:

I also like the lip stain the Dearberry lipstick leaves behind. Look at how flattering that pretty warm pink tint is:

One thing I noticed was that my Memebox shipped EXTREMELY quickly. On Tuesday they told me they would be shipping it this week and it came directly from Korea by Friday! Amazing!

I really enjoyed this box, and I think my favorite product was definitely the lipstick.
